MARCHE BIOBANK
THE BIOBANK OF THE MARCHE REGION

Marche Biobank is a non-profit biobank primarily focused on rare diseases. In full respect of the rights of the individuals involved, it provides services for the collection, storage, processing, and distribution of characterized biological samples and associated data, in accordance with established quality standards, for scientific research purposes.
Marche Biobank is led by a public–private partnership: the Universities of Urbino (UNIURB), Camerino (UNICAM), and Marche Polytechnic University (UNIVPM), together with the companies DIATHEVA, DIATECH Pharmacogenetics, and MIVELL, integrate complementary and essential scientific and industrial expertise for sustainable research capable of rapidly delivering safer and more effective medical products, addressing gaps and removing barriers to the development of therapeutic options for some of the rarest conditions in the world.
Through Marche Biobank, every patient and every citizen can contribute to a research project by donating their biological material, thereby helping to accelerate transformation in diagnosis and treatment systems. The structures and processes of Marche Biobank protect and enhance the unique and valuable link between samples and associated data, while fully respecting participant privacy.
Marche Biobank places itself at the center of a new research model that translates scientific discoveries into new tools for prevention, diagnosis, and therapy, generating significant benefits for citizens, researchers, and the entire ecosystem.
Marche Biobank is a facility within the Heal Italia network and the Precision Medicine Center of Ancona.

SERVICES OF
MARCHE BIOBANK

Systematic collection and storage of biological samples (blood and derivatives, cell lines, tissues, DNA and RNA, urine, etc.) and related associated data, following standard procedures and international guidelines applicable to the context. Every movement of samples and each characterization and analysis activity is recorded and tracked within the Biobank Information Management System (BIMS). A third-party biorepository service is also available, both for existing collections and for future prospective collections.

MATERIAL PROCESSING

The Biobank performs processing of biological samples such as aliquoting, amplification of cell lines for the creation of Master Banks and Working Banks, isolation of serum, plasma, and PBMCs from whole blood, and application of sample preparation protocols for storage, according to the researcher’s specifications.

DISTRIBUTION

The distribution of samples for research purposes represents the mission of Marche Biobank and the defining activity of its workflow. By transparently and impartially applying procedures that regulate access to samples, Marche Biobank positions itself as a guarantor, acting as an intermediary between citizens, patients, and researchers, safeguarding the respective rights involved and ensuring researchers have access to high-quality samples and data.

MOLECULAR ANALYSES

In addition to its core activities, Marche Biobank can carry out further procedures and analyses such as: establishment of cell lines, expansion, cell counting and viability assessment; extraction and analysis of nucleic acids; and advanced single-cell analysis services.

MULTI-OMICS ANALYSES

Marche Biobank supports research through genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics platforms, both in bulk and at the single-cell level, leveraging the support of the Distributed Laboratory.

QUALITY AND CONTROL

Different biological materials undergo characterization activities. Quality controls, viability tests, contamination tests, as well as integrity and purity assessments are carried out on a scheduled basis.

WHY PARTICIPATE IN A
BIOBANK?

Entrusting samples to a biobank means investing in the future and contributing to the development of Precision Medicine, which aims to provide personalized diagnosis and treatment. Biobanking supports the dynamic creation of a high-quality data repository that helps medical research investigate the causes of diseases and identify the most effective prevention and treatment options.

When a sample is consumed during research activities, its scientific value remains intact thanks to the association between the results of analyses and the related data (clinical, familial, lifestyle). Participation does not necessarily provide a direct benefit to the individual or their family, but rather to the entire community. This responsibility is upheld by the Biobank through its role as an impartial entity and guarantor of the rights of all parties involved.

SERVICES FOR
RESEARCHERS

From informed consent to the return of results: every step is guided by responsibility and attention to the individual. Participation is safeguarded through clear, transparent, and secure processes.

Marche Biobank offers researchers and clinicians a qualified infrastructure for the collection, storage, and distribution of standardized, high-quality biological samples. Researchers who, within the scope of a research study, wish to establish a new biorepository can rely on Marche Biobank as a qualified partner, benefiting from a cutting-edge facility, specific expertise in biology and clinical sciences, and a wide range of advanced molecular analysis instruments.

Marche Biobank provides researchers with a sample distribution service within a shared Ethical-Legal-Social Implications (ELSI) framework, based on the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), promoting the ethical reuse and enhancement of existing collections. Access to these services helps accelerate projects, increase data robustness, ensure protection of rights and ethical compliance, as well as provide clear rules on intellectual property and citations.
